Hi all,
Here are the first lot of details for the first canyoning trip of 2009.
Date: Saturday 4th to Sunday 5th of April
Depart: Gearstore, 9am Saturday
Return: Geartstore, approx 5pm Sunday
This trip will take in two easy but spectacular canyons, Twister and Rocky Creek. We will leave from the gearstore at 9am, travel to the Newnes Plateau and set up camp. Saturday afternoon we will tackle Twister and Sunday morning we will look at Rocky Creek. There are glowworms nearby and we'll see if they're out Saturday night.
Both canyons are short and suitable for beginners. There are no abseils in Twister but there is a little bit of scrambling. There is one abseil and one climb in Rocky Creek. The abseils and climbs are not difficult but if you've never touched rock before then a canyon is not the place to start. Thus all particpants on this trip are required to have their level 1 in climbing and abseiling (i.e. attend the beginner's climbing day if you haven't been out with the club before). There are swims and quite a few rock jumps in both so confidence in the water and wetsuits (mountain water is cold, even in summer) are required.
Numbers will be limited so PM me or email glen.shennan@gmail.com to confirm your place. It should be noted that places will also be limited for the second (and more difficult) canyoning trip and preference will be given to those who attend this trip. People who don't have their level 1 can confirm attendance on this trip prior to the beginners day as long as they do attend the beginners day (I will be checking!).
I'll put a list of things you'll need here. If you have any questions regarding gear or organisational details please leave a reply on this thread rather than contacting me directly, so others who might have the same question can see the answer.
Things you'll need (apart from the usual camping equipment):
-Swimmers
-Wetsuit (springer)
-Extra pair of shoes (so one can get wet. It's best to find old joggers with holes in them so the water can drain)
-Extra clothes (at least one set of 'canyon' clothes - again so they can get wet)
-Climbing harness with carabiner
-Gloves (for abseils)
-Day pack (optional), small and with plenty of holes to let water in/out (you'll be swimming with this, it will fill with water and so will need to drain)
-Dry bag (optional) (to go in the day pack, if you want to take lunch/camera/towell etc.)
N.B. The day pack/dry bag are only if you specifically want to carry extra gear. I will be carrying ropes, first aid equipment etc. and the canyons are short so packs for everyone are not necessary. If you do want to bring one don't bring one with super-duper waterproofing. You will just end up with 15 kilos of water on your back. Holes for water to drain from at the bottom of the bag are ideal. These can be cut and made tidy and durable by buying some brass eyelets from Spotlight.
If you don't have any of this gear it can probably be borrowed from the gear store on the day. If you do need gear could you let me know exactly what don't have when you contact me to confirm your place so that I can make sure we have enough stuff. Also if you do need get please arrive at the gearstore at 8:30am so that we can get everyone kitted out in time.
If anyone is will to drive and has spare seats could you also let me know, and likewise if you're unable to find transport.
More details will likely follow.
Glen
