Intermediate back country ski trip – July 22-26

Postby Peter K » Wed Apr 22, 2009 10:00 pm

This trip follows on directly after the beginners trip. The plan is that we will have a carload from the beginners trip stay down at Jindabyne on Tuesday night instead of going back to Newcastle. Anyone coming who wasn’t on the beginners trip will need to drive down on Tuesday night to meet at Jindabyne early in the morning.

Grade: Intermediate, you will have had to done backcountry skiing before although if you suck (at skiing) its no big problem. More importantly you will need to be pack fit and keen to spend most days ski touring with a full pack all day, possibly in some less than optimal weather.

Depending on the number of people, experience people & cars we have there are two basic plans.

Only one car / one leader:
A multi day ski tour starting at Munyang power station, heading onto the rolling ground (possibly via the Kerries) then heading south towards Kosciusko, then back north and down Spencer Ck to Guthega dam.

Two cars & two leaders
Split the group into two, and do the K to K, Kosciusko to Kiandra, starting at opposite ends and doing a key swap half way. I think we would have to be very fast to make it back to uni on Monday!

For costs and the kit that you will need look at the beginners trip for a rough idea

Post below if you’re interested in coming. Let me know if you have a car.

Cheers Pete

Hi Guys, any more information about what will be happening on this trip? I now definitely don't have a car but probably will be meeting up with everyone at Jindabyne but will need a lift home if possible.

Dunks, how are you getting down to Jindabyne? Any chance I could tag along?

At the moment there are 6 people coming. Me, Godwin, Gez & Claire will be already down there. If we take Godwins Ute & 1 other car then we will be sweet to give AJ & Dunks a ride home.

How cosy do you guys want to get?

Sleep & cook in 2 groups of 3 (lightest) or in 3 groups of 2

I'm favouring squishing 3 people into each tent but its going to be a bit of effort to melt enough snow for 6 people on 2 stoves

Does anyone have a petrol stove like an MSR? or do you all have crappy gas stoves

PS the K to K plan is definitely off.
I think we will be doing a big circuit from the power station up onto the kerries, then Sth down the main range to kosi then back to the dam
