Indoor climbing competition, 28-29 April, 2001
The wind howled among the pulleys as the intrepid indoor climber
fastened his harness. The descending sun had advised the wind to
send in extra drifts of snow and the temperature plummeted.
The climber shivered as he clapped his hands together, looking toward
the last piece of plastic fifteen metres above. Chalk motes flying
from his hands joined the snow flakes gathering at his feet.
His deep, concentrated breath plumed out in a misty cloud as he
took another step.....

The Competition
From all indications, competitors really enjoyed the weekend. Phil
Staples designed the routes, which were typically both challenging
and thought provoking (alternatively described as strenuous and
technical).
Competitors continued a tradition of spending less than 10% of the
time of an event actually doing the designated activity, with plenty
of effort going into the basketball, hacky, bouldering, videos,
frisbee, bbq and indoor aid climbing.
It's no doubt that the entertainment on Saturday evening from one
of Newcastle's many nameless cover bands at the brewery reinforced
the out-of-towners' perceptions that Newcastle really is "a
big country town".
The group had spread out to cover a good portion of the brewery
wharf, and with the hosts desperate to take the group elsewhere,
anywhere, a decision was made to try and get everyone's attention
with the drawcard of food. An effective ploy, for seconds after
people converged on the pizzas they were shepherded into cars and
led away from dodginess to a decent venue to listen to some decent
music.
Oh yeah, some people managed to get higher than others on the wall,
